One of the murals that will be created from funds received by Inspire Olympia Grant funding will be: Plant Relations – this 100 foot long mural will illustrate local plants and their uses important to Squaxin culture: past and future. The location is in the TJ Potter Alley in the heart of downtown Olympia, Washington.
Designed and painted by Andrea Wilbur Sigo, her family, and other Squaxin artists. The 3 days of painting will be a festivity itself with music and food supplied by local businesses. All painters are paid an artist stipend. Christopher Gerber, a commercial mural artist with over 30 years experience will be team support and coach. Gerber also assisted Nisqually artist Kyle Sanchez, his family, his canoe family, and other Nisqually artists, in painting the mural “For the Ancestors” across the alley from where “Plant Relations” will be painted. This 100 ft long mural depicts many of the animal relations of this region. Walking down this alley will be an immersive larger than life experience of Coast Salish art.
We intend to have T-shirts and posters of details from the mural which will be available for fund raising & sharing in the love of this special plant relations mural in our Olympia, WA downtown core.
The photo below depicts Kyle’s art on the left wall~ ‘For the Ancestors’ and the blank wall to the right is where ‘Plant Relations’ will be.
